In the dog world there are many people who want to work with or pursue an interest in dogs in a professional manner based on the best current information. But it can be hard to differentiate such a professional approach from those with a less diligent awareness of the needs of the dogs in their care. This Nationally recognised Advanced Level Certificate course is fully accredited by the Open College Network and will help you establish your skills, knowledge and credentials to identify you as a true canine professional.

Advanced Award in Canine Health and Welfare
To be completed by all students
  • Essential Dogma! – understanding the dog. History of man's relationship with dogs. Breeds and types.
  • The five key canine life stages: preventive healthcare.
  • Canine health: infectious diseases of dogs.
  • Canine health: non-infectious diseases of dogs.
  • Canine health: the sick dog and essential first aid.
  • Canine nutrition: feeding dogs through the life stages. Special needs of sick dogs.
  • Canine reproduction: pregnancy, birth, neutering etc.
  • Canine welfare law: animal welfare law, dangerous dogs act.
  • Ethics: difficult philosophical questions on canine welfare, quality of life, euthanasia.

Advanced Certificate in Canine Health and Welfare

Our understanding of canine behaviour and the various relationships that we enjoy with our dogs is advancing rapidly. This constantly updated course is designed to provide the very latest information for those keen to study dogs and apply their new understanding in a professonal capacity.

For example, what makes a successful dog training class? Fulfilling what the owners want - a sociable and well trained dog where both get the very best out of the relationship.

Author Val Strong is an international expert in training Emergency Response Dogs for people with epilepsy and other complex medical conditions. Val also has many years experience in the training and rehabilitation of problem dogs and is an expert in the effects of diet on canine behaviour and training.
COAPE Dogwise
In this course you will learn:
  • Basic, essential dog training techniques; the core of any successful class.
  • How to motivate owners.
  • Running successful puppy classes.
  • How to accommodate special needs dogs or owners into your training classes.

If you are already running a training class, or thinking of starting one, then this course is for you. This Stage is packed full with fresh and practical techniques, advice and ideas that cut to the quick of running great dog training classes.

Unit 2:
Why, when and How? Choosing a venue. Home visits vs. class training. Safety first.
Unit 3:
Both ends of the lead. Teaching and learning styles. Client needs. Special dogs. Owner expectations. Motivation. Progression. How dogs learn and factors affecting learning. Learning theory. Clicker training.
Unit 4:
Training vs. Behaviour. Difficult dogs, difficult owners and an introduction to dealing with aggression. Understanding and recognising stress in training classes. Case History examples provided from a dog club for students to work through.

Advanced Certificate in Canine Health and Welfare

Rehabilitation and Rescue)
This constantly updated course is designed for anyone wanting a comprehensive understanding of canine rescue and rehabilitation.
Wood Green Animal Shelter
Unit 1:
Life at the shelter: Hygiene and disease control. The causes and the effects of stress on kennelled dogs and the repercussions, in respect to their health and behaviour and the safety and wellbeing of their carers.
Unit 2:
Temperament testing: Working with difficult dogs. Handling techniques demonstrated using video.
Unit 3:
Behaviour problems in shelters: Management of adult dogs and avoiding problems in puppies raised in the shelter environment.
Unit 4:
Rehoming dogs. The general public's perception of dogs in society today, their expectations and how this affects the rehoming of dogs, whether they are strays or surrendered pets with histories. It also considers different breeds and their needs, how this can affect the success of rehoming processes and the pitfalls of incorrectly placing dogs.

Course Format:
Each Unit of the course notes is e-Mailed out to students as a separate e-Book. Students also have access to the COAPE Student Resource Centre where additional support and course material are available online. The Resource Centre gives you access to a range of rich media content to complement the formal course notes, including video, sound, graphics and pictures, web links, and additional written content.

COAPE supplies a specially designed ‘template’ to assist students with coursework presentation. Courseworks are submitted via the internet, marked and returned in the same way.
Course Duration:
Each Stage nine months with two runs per year:
1: February 1st to October 31st.
2: September 1st to May 31st the following year.
