CPD50 LIVING WITH WOLVES
Wolf hybrid and Wolf Lookalike Dogs. All professionals who are going to come into contact with these animals should be aware of how they should be handled, whether they are in a veterinary practice or training class or owning one or just meeting one in the local park.
24th and 25th October 2009
Gipsy Hill Hotel, Exeter
Written and led by COAPE Practitioners Kirsty Peake and Jacqui Jones.
Do you work with Dogs? Live with Dogs?
Are you interested in wolves, hybrids and lookalike dogs?
In a five minute internet search wolf hybrid breeders were found in Boston, Lancs; Blackpool, Lancs; Exeter, Plymouth and South Molton, Devon; Aberdeen and the Hebrides, Scotland; Kent, Staffordshire, Wales and Ireland. Alongside these adverts were adverts for Wolf Lookalike Dogs also all over the country.

DEFRA only gave permission for the breeding and selling of F3 Wolf Hybrids in this country in January 2009.  Websites give all kinds of conflicting advice regarding these animals on how they should be raised, handled etc. What and who to believe?

All professionals who are going to come into contact with these animals should be aware of how they should be handled, whether they are in a veterinary practice or training class or owning one or just meeting one in the local park.

If we are not prepared and ready for the increase in ownership of these fascinating, striking animals then there is the potential that they could become a big problem in the UK.

Wolf Lookalikes are also becoming very popular and these also need slightly different handling and training in comparison to the recognised dog breeds.

DipCABT CABP MAPDT681 MPSA
APDT Member No 681
Kirsty successfully passed her COAPE Diploma in 1999 and was one of the first to qualify as COAPE Association Behaviour Practitioner with the launch of the Association in 2005. She now runs a busy full time animal behaviour referral and training practice, mainly in in the south-west of England, but also helps out with dog behaviour problems on a voluntary basis from her second home in Montana, near Yellowstone Park in the USA.

Kirsty has a lifetime of experience with dogs, cats and horses and has bred and shown Lakeland Terriers successfully for the last 20 years. She has also lived and worked in Africa and the Middle East working in Human Resources in the construction industry were she became involved with ‘village dogs’ around the construction sites.

Her fascination for how dogs behave began here, and then she ‘discovered’ wolves and studied their relationship with the modern dog. She now regularly visits Yellowstone National Park in the USA to study wolf behaviour and leads study groups there to observe the wolves and experience a truly wild ecosystem.

As a member of the Professional Speakers Association, Kirsty gives presentations to high level industry clients both at home and overseas on topics such as ‘Working as a Team’, where she often uses the wolf pack’s social structure and organisation as an example. She is also a former member of the British Olympic sailing team. For more information about Kirsty Click Here
