Wood Green Animal Shelter
What the student will learn
Unit 1:
Helping the Puppy (Correspondence): This Unit deals with Puppy development, socialisation, habituation, breed, health and common puppy ‘problems’ in the home and asks the student to look at these from the perspective of a rescue or re-homing centre.
Unit 2:
Dealing with Stress (Correspondence): Stress is a major factor when kennelling dogs; this unit looks at both the causes and the effects of stress on kennelled dogs and the repercussions, in respect to their health and behaviour and the safety and wellbeing of their carers.
Unit 3:
Dogs are Dogs (Correspondence): This unit deals with the general public’s perception of dogs in society today, their expectations and how this affects the rehoming of dogs, whether they are strays or surrendered pets with histories. It also considers different breeds and their needs, how this can affect the success of rehoming processes and the pitfalls of incorrectly placing dogs.
Units 1,2 and 3 must be completed and submitted before students will be able to attend the Unit 4 Practical weekend.
Unit 4:
Practical Session (Saturday and Sunday): This weekend will be held at Wood Green Animal Shelter (King's Bush Farm, London Road, Godmanchester, Cambs, PE29 2NH) and will be tutored by Sue Ketland (Wood Greens Training Officer and Behaviourist) and Dave Brice.

The weekend will cover a wide variety of topics and will include some hands-on work for the students – although there will also be classroom sessions.

Subjects covered will include: Intake procedures, stress and coping strategies, assessing shelter dogs, canine communication, behaviour problems, aggression, rehoming and rehabilitation/training.
Unit 5:
Special Study: This brings together all of the information covered during the course; this will require the student to show understanding and knowledge of the whole rehoming process, its pro’s and con’s and constructive opinions of how the students chosen case could have been (if necessary) improved.

The study is obviously aimed at the Intermediate level and will be marked with this in mind. There will be a cut-off date for final submission of the special study – you will be informed of this on the final day of the practical weekend.
